Location List
Records and Archives of most Unitarian Congregations in Great Britain
Compiled by Alan Ruston
Introduction
This listing of congregations is by no means complete. Many not recorded here have long disappeared and their records lost. Others have left few extant records and those which remain have little to interest the family historian. This list arose out of a census conducted by the Unitarian Historical Society (UHS) in the 1970s by its then secretary, Rev Andrew Hill and gives details of those congregations the whereabouts of whose records have been reported. In its original form it was published in the Transactions of the UHS in 1981 and 1982 and the Society has updated it on a master file from subsequent reports from congregations, libraries and record offices.
There are without doubt some errors, both in the listing and with certain items having been deposited in a record office without the UHS being informed. Some records unfortunately may even have been lost since being noted in the 1970s. The situation is of course not static and parts of the list are subject to change, when for example, items are deposited in a repository. There is no central controlling mechanism within Unitarianism. Each congregation has complete power and responsibility over the disposal of its records and does not have to inform the UHS as to their location. However most congregations have reported on their holdings. The UHS does not have any further information on a congregation’s records than is shown in this listing. It is not able to answer genealogical questions as it does not possess a library or data bank.
The congregations are listed in counties for England, and in more general terms for Wales and Scotland, and the county arrangement which existed in 1980 when the lists were published has been retained. The record office or similar repository is shown and the records deposited may or may not contain material of use to family historians; each deposit will need to be considered individually. Unfortunately some will contain nothing of genealogical interest whilst others will be a rich source for the researcher. The Public Record Office reference, in the majority of cases, refers to the county and notation used in List of Non-Parochial registers and records in the custody of the Registrar General, published in 1859, reissued 1969 by the List and Index Society, vol. 42. This remains the key book showing the deposit of these registers, now arranged in the RG 4 series in the Public Record Office, and each is followed by a piece number. The information given here should be sufficient to trace a particular deposit. The International Genealogical Index includes births and pre-1754 marriages extracted from these registers.
The 1859 publication shows the chapels listed as predominantly Presbyterian or Baptist, and there are only about half-a-dozen designated Unitarian. In the 1840s many still clung to the older name, and Unitarian denominational organisation was nascent. Some are termed `Presbyterian or Independent’, a description which goes back to the early eighteenth-century lack of certainty as to denomination. Others evolved away from English Presbyterianism and became Independent; George’s Yard, Hammersmith (Middlesex 11) is in this category, and there are others. It has not been included here as for most of its history this chapel can be considered as part of Independency. Therefore this present listing should be read, at least for the period up to about the 1840s, in conjunction with that contained in My Ancestors were Congregationalists, compiled by D J H Clifford (Society of Genealogists, first published 1992).
Some chapels were always considered Presbyterian but disappeared before they could be termed Unitarian, or were absorbed into other congregations; the Enfield, Middlesex, Baker Street Meeting and the Uxbridge Meeting are probably in this category. The history of Dissenting churches in London is especially complex, and the denominational ascription of Presbyterian, Independent or Baptist by the Registrar General to several congregations is difficult to substantiate. The Registrar General must have found the classification of many Dissenting chapels problematical to say the least especially as there was another category of chapel found chiefly in Durham and Northumberland labelled ‘United Presbyterian’ or ‘Scotch Church’. Formed after 1800 these were Scottish in origin and organisation and not in the English Presbyterian tradition. They are not listed here. The records of Universalist Churches, of which there were never many, have been included. References to material is almost wholly to original sources and not to secondary or printed material.
An outline listing of the remaining records of the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland, held in the Public Record Office in Northern Ireland, has been included. This is because this small group of some thirty churches has traditionally been associated with Unitarian movement in other parts of the UK. Theological disputes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries created small synods of churches which eventually formed themselves into the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland in 1910. Based on the presbyterian system of church government, the organisation is entirely separate from the Unitarian movement in England, Scotland and Wales.
For those records held by a congregation still in existence contact should be made with the Church Secretary, whose name and address is shown in the Annual Directory of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, a copy of which is held by many public libraries. In cases of difficulty a copy can be obtained from the General Assembly at Essex Hall, 1-6 Essex Street, London, WC2R 3HY. Queries or questions relating to family history should not be directed to Essex Hall whose staff are not in a position to respond to them. Please remember that church secretaries may have little interest in genealogical enquiries and there is no requirement that they need to answer a query, certainly if requested over the telephone. When writing always enclose a stamped addressed envelope and if help is given please write back a letter of acknowledgement and thanks.
