Obituaries
Unitarian Ministers 1900-2004
Index and Synopsis
Compiled by Alan Ruston
Introduction
The obituaries shown in this Index relate to recognised Unitarian ministers whose names appear in the annual Essex Hall Year Book (1890-1928), the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches (GA) Year Book (from 1929), and Directory (from the 1980s) whose deaths occurred between 1 January 1900 and 31 December 1999. In the majority of cases an obituary is contained within the Year Book, but not in every instance. The overwhelming majority had obituary notices in the Inquirer or other denominational journal.
The range of the Index covers periods of ministerial service dating from the 1860s to the 1990s. The list was originally published in the Transactions of the Unitarian Historical Society (TUHS) in April 2000 Vol 22 No2 as a Supplement covering the period 1900-1999. A further Supplement was published with the TUHS 2005, Vol 23 No3 which includes obituaries relating to the deaths which took place in the period 1999-2004, as well as corrections and additions which had been identified in the content of the 2000 Supplement. In the future it is hoped to take the Index beyond 31 December 2004. An Index to the Obituaries of Unitarian Ministers who died 1850-1899 appeared as a Supplement to the TUHS 2006 (Vol 23 No 4).
Recognised ministers who served Unitarian congregations with no known obituary have been omitted from the main list. A separate list of the names of these ministers without an obituary who died after 1900 has been included at the end of the main section. Those persons in lay charge of congregations in whatever capacity are not shown in either list. Previous periods served by ministers in lay charge of congregations have not been included, nor the names of those ministers whose training and service as ministers was entirely outside the UK. The precise location of congregations can be obtained from contemporary Year Books.
There are well known families of Unitarian ministers, with numerous fathers and sons in the list whose family connection appears obvious.. However relationships have only been included where it is clear. Otherwise there is the risk of error respecting claims of relationship, based sometimes on hearsay evidence, and the difficulty of proving connections between those with commonly found names, like Davies.
Structure
The structure of each entry consists of:
- Surname and first names, and in the case of women their maiden or previous names where known.
- The date and place of birth. Where the actaul date is not given, the age at death is provided later in the entry which should enable researchers to locate, using an internet genealogical web site, the official birth registration entry or other more precise information.
- The university and theological training college attended if any, including those of other denominations.
- Degrees awarded.
- The name of other denominations where the person listed served as a minister; total ministerial service to Unitarian congregations with dates of start and finish, and the last congregation served with year of commencement.
- Date and place of death (ae denotes age at death).
- Journal obituary references showing year and page, with that found in the Inquirer (I) or Christian Life (CL) or similar journal coming first.
- Books by or about the deceased ministers life.
- The year of the Essex Hall or GA Year Book when an obituary appeared, preceded by an asterix *
Abbreviations
The following abbreviations are used:
College training for the ministry: UC refers to the Unitarian Home Missionary Board later Unitarian College, Manchester. HMC refers to Manchester New College later Manchester College, Oxford and now Harris Manchester College. Car refers to the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen. PP denotes membership of the Order of Pioneer Preachers.
Titles of other Colleges or Universities where individual ministers were educated are given in full. The lack of a college reference means that no evidence has been found that the person attended a theological training college or institution. The record of service in the Unitarian ministry only is recorded; start and finish dates are given but not gaps in service except where of a long duration. Details of ministerial service in other denominations is not shown though the denomination in which it took place is recorded, e.g. “Cong” for service as a Congregational minister but the names of other denominations are shown more fully.
The journal in which the obituary has been found is shown as follows: I refers the Inquirer; CL to the Christian Life; NSP to the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian, each with year and page reference. Oxford DNB refers to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004). Not all the obituaries about paticular person which have been identified in Unitarian journals are necessarily shown here. For example, when an Inquirer obituary is shown there may well be another (up to 1929) in the Christian Life, and vice versa.

The list of deceased Unitarian ministers compiled by Professor R K Webb who kindly made it available to me in draft form. This was particularly valuable in cases where ministers died abroad. Where I found no obituary reference but Professor Webb’s list provides a place and date of death, this entry has been included in the main list but annotated at the conclusion with (RKW List).
Other published sources used are shown in the body of the text. Details were obtained from a variety of sources, which have included UC and HMC records, relatives of the persons themselves and the indexes to births and deaths maintained at the Family Record Centre, London.
I am unable to answer queries from readers asking for verification of specific details or additional information as it is unlikely that I could locate the original source. Researchers seeking further detail should consult the sources quoted in each entry. Regretfully I cannot answer genealogical queries arising out of the index.
E&OE
In such a large compilation using a variety of sources some errors will have crept in despite the best of intentions. This index, like others I have produced, should be used as finding tool and the springboard from which further research can be carried out. When an index entry is being relied upon as the basis of a detailed research project then the basic facts should always be checked. Where different sources show various dates of birth or death, or even of place, what information is included is that which appears to be the most likely; the variations are of a few days or months, not of the year the event took place.
More detail required
Numerous entries show gaps in detail, and there could people who were briefly ministers that have been omitted from the list. I would be grateful if those readers possessing missing details could send them to me (address below) to include the exact reference in published or publicly available sources where obituaries and the like appear. Please also send any errors which are noted, with details of supporting sources, so corrections can be made.

Conclusion
I am indebted to Rev Peter Hewis of the Ministers’ Benevolent Fund, and the Librarians of Harris Manchester College and Dr Williams’s Library for the considerable help that has been given to me. John Linton, who is undertaking a similar task for Methodist ministers, and I have exchanged mutually useful information. To the many others who have provided me with detail over the years I wish to express my omnibus thanks, as it will not be possible to express my appreciation individually. Sometimes this has been only a date of birth or death of a relative, but often they are the only source who could supply the detail to complete an otherwise defective entry; letters containing information that have been sent to me over the years on particular people will be lodged at Dr Williams’s Library. My wife Rosemary has given considerable help with the task of proof reading and her fresh and keen eye has often corrected inconsistencies and errors.
